Sharing One’s Faith on the Internet
Bunnie Klassen

When Cord mentioned to me that he was looking for ideas/writers for articles about sharing one’s faith on the internet it sparked an interest in me. I told him to leave it with me for a bit and I would think on it, not fully committing myself to writing it.

I have been attempting to get a couple of blogs running and at the time didn’t realize the Lord would give me plenty of time to think on the subject as well as write my blogs and articles. My means of supplementing my income dried up. Funny how He works isn’t it?

A number of years ago, also not working, I started spending much of my time on the internet. Wanting to do something that would please God, and wanting to share my faith and maybe make a small difference, I opened a Christian based chat room on ICQ, one of the then most popular chat rooms available. Anyway, I manned the room at least 8 hours a day and kept regular start times so people could rely on fellowship at those times. It actually became quite popular.

There are “side” rooms you can go into for private conversation, and many times someone would ask me or another for counsel, or come with a problem, or just need someone to listen, whether I could “solve” it or not. Now we all know I don’t solve anything anyway. That’s in the Lord’s hands. We would pray for and with each other in the “open” room, ask biblical questions, or just chat and fellowship.

Be warned though, there are those who would cause dissension, as there are anywhere. Unbelievers and even Satanists will attempt to disrupt. As the moderator of the room you can ban these people. We would answer any questions as long as they are presented in an acceptable manner. A way of ministering to others. But that did not mean we had to take abuse.

A few years later I was involved in prison ministry and edited and publish a newsletter with inmate written articles etc. In the end it was going into 20 countries via mail with over 600 copies being sent out. And it was put online and ministered to many more through the readership there. Many in foreign countries got a master copy, email, and sent it out to their own lists as well, so I am not sure what the total readership was.

Currently, as I said, I am starting to blog. I will get two going, and hopefully they will become paying blogs. One is on diabetes, the other is movie reviews. The third one I will ad will be Christian, but I am still thinking on what I want to do with it. I think maybe I would like to have more than one contributor (me) writing the articles, so if you are inclined, let me know. In this way we can use the internet to minister.

Sometimes it is hard to share our faith directly to those right around us. Many of us have a fear of rejection, or don’t feel we are knowledgeable enough, or a number of reasons. But starting a blog, or a chat room, and letting friends and family know the internet address can minister to them Although it is more “arms length” in some ways, you never know who you are going to touch.

If you have some like-minded friends perhaps you could come together to keep a chat room open longer hours. Or you could all be contributors of articles for a blog or ezine account. Say each contribute an article a month. Ezine articles are free to submit and reach thousands.

Write about what has touched you. A scripture, an insight the Lord has inspired you with, pick a scriptural topic and explore it. Believe me, others will be inspired by what you have experienced.

If you have the funds and want to do something a little bigger you can have a website designed or design one yourself. When I was with On Fire Ministries, we had our own website and domain name. We had many pages on the site and linked to numerous other sites as well, ministering and sharing faith with others.

These you have to promote to start getting the traffic to them, or build lists etc to send updates to. There are free ways of promoting the traffic, but you end up getting a lot of stuff in your email promoting their sites to you. Links with other sites helped and is free, but be sure it is a site you want to link to. Preferably complementary to your own.

I hope this gives you a few ideas on how to use the internet to share your faith and minister to others. I am sure, if you think about, there are countless ways you can serve the Lord via this world medium. Sell Christian books and articles even. This medium only grows and grows so use it to spread the word and God bless you all.
